August 10th Completely **Unofficial** World Long Drive Rankings

william-hinson

Newcomer 17 year old William Hinson starting to move up the Long Drive ranks

Two smaller tournaments were added in this edition of the rankings.  The Kid’s Chance Invitational, hosted by Kevin Bullard, boasted a field of 22.  The winner was a new face to long drive,William Hinson, who outbattled a number of top 20 ranked hitters for his first tournament win.  Hinson got started in WLDC locals in 2011, and has picked up momentum since then.   The win earned Hinson 150 ranking points.

The 20th Metter LD Invitational, the longest running indepdendent long drive event was won by Landon Gentry, who moves back into the #1 spot by a slight edge over Joe Miller.  These two will meet head to head at the REMAX World Championships this October.

Also in this update, points for locals have been dropped.  The 2011 REMAX has been upped from 1800 to 2400 points to match the increase in LDA and independent events this year.  This keeps it proportionally the same percentage of value.

Congratulations to Landon Gentry, who was victorious in the 2012 Keystone Shootout, which concluded play this afternoon.    The Keystone featured a very strong field with 9 of the top 20 ranked in the world participating, and several of those making the final 8.  The win was worth 300 points, and allowed Gentry to widen his hold on the #1 spot, despite losing some points for the 2010 Keystone, which dropped out.

Landon seems to be in top form once again with the World Finals approaching in less than 3 months.  But will he be able to avenge an early exit from 2011 which saw him watch the finals from the sidelines?

Just two major events remain before worlds, the Mile High Shootout(now expanded to 56 players), and the LDA Tour Championships at Winstar. Interestingly, Jamie Sadlowski, currently #6, has apparently signed up for the Mile High, so we should get a good

Completely **Unofficial** World Long Drive Rankings (June 12th Update)

This edition of the rankings includes a ton of new entries including the just concluded Endless Summer Invitational in California, the Tennessee Shootout, the Midwest Classic, and the Swedish National Championships.  Since the rankings include two years of events plus 3 years of World Championships, the 2010 Tennessee Shootout has been dropped.

Congratulations to Aaron Mansfield, who was dominating in his win on Monday in the Endless Summer LDA event.  His winning blast of 406 was preceded by a 407 on a tight tree lined fairway.  Mansfield is probably the hottest player in long drive, and continues to climb the rankings.  His solid swing will make him a favorite this fall in Mesquite – but does he have the really big ball like a Joe Miller?

**Completely Unofficial** World Long Drive Rankings (May 8th Update)

Landon Wins Alligator AlleyWith his victory in the Alligator Alley Shootout in Florida over the weekend, Landon Gentry earned 300 points and slid past Joe Miller into the #1 spot on the list.

At this point, who the best long driver in the world is RIGHT NOW seems to be up in the air – and the answer could be ‘whoever hits it best that day.’  Jamie Sadlowski seldom competes outside worlds, but is many people’s top pick still.  Joe Miller’s season starts later in the spring as Europe is still cold and he would also get many #1 votes.  He gets his chance in July at the 2 big Swedish events.

Also this edition, the recent REMAX Australian Championships were added.  The 2010 Desert Launch has been dropped, being more than 2 years old.

Here is the updated list of the top 200:

Why Are You Still Using That Weighted Training Club?

Here is a great feature from the show ‘Sport Science’, talking about the myth of warming up with a weighted implement.

In baseball, the pros still commonly use up to 16 oz. of extra weight in the form of a ‘donut’ slid onto the barrel of the bat.  After swinging this several times, your regular bat will feel lighter and faster.  I remember this phenomenon from little league.

The same holds true in golf.  If you are warming up with two clubs at the beginning of a round, you will be putting yourself at a huge disadvantage – watch:

This video discusses a short term warmup effect, but these principles hold true over the long term as well for building speed and distance.

Chances are that when you train with a super heavy training driver ( there are several on the market), you will gain little or no speed with your own driver, and you will be learning a completely different motion.  Or even worse, your contact will suffer just like you saw on the video.  Nothing is worse for driving distance than missing the sweet spot!  The golf swing is a highly specific and coordinated motion, so the training must be similar if you wish to get the best resutls.

So get rid of that super heavy training club – you’re learning a different sport with it!  It will only make you go faster when you swing with that much weight.  Sell it on Ebay to someone who hasn’t seen the science!

Masters of Long Drive Tournament and Charity Pro Am

Kyle Blakely winning swing at the Masters of Long DriveSome of the most talented golfers in the world enjoyed a beautiful day in Greater Atlanta. Few can be found to drive a club faster than Bubba, Tiger, and Dustin so when we had the honor of hosting 28 of the longest driver’s in the world we were excited to support The Foster Children’s Foundation with their efforts. As always, the long drivers did not disappoint hitting drives that the Pro Am participants will be talking about for years to come. A good time was had by all and the participants expressed awe that a golf ball could fly that far. The money raised for The Foster Children’s Foundation provides assistance to foster children in support of their family’s efforts to raise great kids. The Foundation includes mentoring programs that increase the children’s knowledge about being independent including applying to college, managing their finances responsibly, and preparing them for careers by assisting with resume writing. American Power Golf counts it an honor and a privilege to help further the work of this wonderful organization and support the people that make it possible to give kids a chance.

The crew came out swinging at Saturdays long drive event. Every bit of the 450 yd. grid was used and thanks to a little wind every group hit 400+ bombs all day. The display of raw talent and supersonic swing speed was amazing. The competition was tough with one of the deepest 26 man fields you will find anywhere. Since only 4 of 8 would advance from the round, it was awesome to see the shortest drive out of the round at 411 yds. It took a ball over 420 to make it to the next round. Kyle Blakely, Patrick Hooper, Justin Moose, Houston Hair, Dustin Merrill, Jeff Crittenden, Trent Scruggs, Steve Magan, Landon Gentry, and Clay Lanigan hit drives well over 400 yds. all day to make it to the shootout with a goal of Final 4 match play. Houston Hair, Trent Scruggs, Kyle Blakely, and Landon Gentry prevailed in making the final matchup. Houston Hair advanced past Landon Gentry while Kyle Blakely out distanced Trent Scruggs to make the final pairing. Giving an unforgettable show, these two players hit 400 yd. blast after blast to battle it out. Kyle hit a drive 427 yds. And was in the lead a Houston took on his final ball. Houston did not disappoint with a huge drive up the middle right of the grid. Anticipation was in the air as the wait was on for the numbers to be called back. The crowd knew it was close and the number called back was just 10 yds shy of the Kyle’s mammoth drive at 417. Kyle not only was the 2012 Masters of Long Drive Champion but also had the longest ball of the day at 431 yds. We congratulate Kyle Blakely and thank all of this year’s talented competitors.

APG looks forward to our next event The Dixie Classic on November 9th and 10th to be held at the prestigious Eagle’s Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, GA! Hit ‘em Long!!!

Metter Invitational Registration open Friday.

First APG Developmental Tour Event of 2012

Alright Developmental’ers….
It’s official, the APG-Developmental Tour would like to present “The Sandhills Shootout”
Saturday March 24th, 2012 , (approx. 1:00pm start time)
Little River Golf Resort
500 Little River Farm Blvd.
Carthage, NC 28327
www.littleriver.com

$200 entry fee…
(includes a morning round of golf prior to LD event, a deli-plate lunch buffet, unlimited range balls and of course the LD event)

$175 entry fee… (if you’re NOT planning on a round of golf in the morning, includes everything else)

We will take the first 16 guys that commit and then, at the most,  take 8 additional competitors in two groups of four at a time.
For example, once we have 16 commited then the next 3 guys will be on the waiting list until we get a 4th for a total of 20 competitors, then the next guys will have to wait until we reach 24 total.
Ideally, we would like to have 16 or 24, but can make an inbetween number work (maybe work in a bye for the longest balls of round 1 or something like that)
This just keeps the grouping moving faster and much easier to work the brackets.
Format will be double elimination until the final shootout.
16 competitors – payout will be 1st thru 4th
20 competitors – payout will be 1st thru 5th
24 competitors – payout will be 1st thru 6th
Not possitive on the purse because I am working on getting some additional sponsorship money, but we will be hitting for over your entry fee….
